They combine two digital products, epubs and audiobooks, to create an entirely new format, an enhanced fixed layout epub with an embedded professionally narrated audio track, with word highlighting. Readalouds are distributed by most ebook resellers that accept epubs, including iBooks, Kobo (app), Google Play, and Overdrive.
This format, geared to children in the preK to 3rd grade range, makes picture books come to life. They are relatively inexpensive to produce and they generate healthy margins because they command list prices that are more than double those for the same title as a straight fixed layout epub. Over the past few years, Nord Compo has produced thousands of readalouds for dozens of publishers in multiple languages. The production involves the creation of the epub, the creation of the audiobook, the integration of the two and the creation of a timing file to enable the text highlighting.
